Gartner Magic Quadrant for SAM Tools, 2018 | Why a Clear Vision Matters

Earlier this year, Gartner recognized Aspera as sole Visionary in the first ever Gartner Magic Quadrant for Software Asset Management Tools.

We feel that the report assesses SAM vendors based on their ability to execute and completeness of vision and is filled with market insights. Prospective SAM users can also compare their needs with Aspera’s innovative Software Asset Management tools.

Being named in the Magic Quadrant is a big accomplishment. We’re proud, but in an industry filled with unsatisfied SAM users, we’re even more proud of our customers’ satisfaction, and the invaluable impact that our customers have brought to our innovative product development over the last 18 years.

You see, Aspera has been building world-class SAM solutions for nearly two decades. We believe we were positioned as a Visionary because we create industry-defining innovations, listen to our customers, and offer a flexible, customizable product.

In Software Asset Management, the real innovation is satisfying customers

We believe that motivation is reflected in our ratings on Gartner Peer Insights. As one review said: “very good customer service, very open to new ideas and suggestions from the customers, very good tool.”

We feel our customers’ satisfaction is an anomaly in an industry with so many unsatisfied SAM users.

Last summer, the Gartner report “Select the Right SAM Tool to Reduce Risks, Optimize Costs and Improve Decision Making” (Authors: Roger Williams, et al; Published: 21 August 2017) cited “According to the 2017 Gartner SAM Tools Research Circle Survey, only 23% of respondents reported their SAM tools aligned extremely well with their pre-purchase expectations.” 1

Customer-guided SAM product innovation

Aspera is the only SAM Tool provider that gathers candid feedback from customer roundtables.

That isn’t something to make customers feel better – this feedback directly impacts our product development. In fact, LicenseControl for Salesforce was a result of customer influence.

LicenseControl for Salesforce reduces spending and license purchasing across all Salesforce Orgs. This cloud solution looks at every license and gives options to contain and lower costs, such as deactivating unused accounts and watching over-limit fees. LicenseControl is built to specifically monitor Salesforce licensing and take actions that optimize those costs while treating the data securely.

This is one example of how our customers truly contribute to Aspera product innovations.

Commitment to transparent, customer-friendly SAM solutions

Over the years, Aspera consultants have encountered SAM solutions that are incomplete, rely on third parties, or untested in Proof-of-Concept (POC).

Running a POC before purchasing a SAM Tool identifies customers’ specific needs. No customer is alike, so a POC is crucial. It also requires time, guidance, and transparency from the SAM Tool provider. When you’re busy dominating the market, it’s easier to offer a one-size-fits-all solution and move on.

We believe the research in the Magic Quadrant for SAM Tools supports the idea that customers should perform their due diligence and research when choosing a SAM Tool:

Organizations should not choose a SAM vendor simply on the basis of its position in the Magic Quadrant. Instead, they should build a list of criteria that describes their current and future needs, then select from vendors that best meet those requirements (see ‘Select the Right SAM Tool to Reduce Risks, Optimize Costs and Improve Decision Making’).

Aspera’s focus on large-scale enterprise Software Asset Management means we devote the time and effort to running POCs. This gives us the knowledge to apply our proven, flexible tools and in-house expert services to help these companies save up to 30% in their software licenses.

This commitment to strategic SAM builds success. Our customers consistently win SAM awards while implementing our tools. Novartis Pharma AG was honored earlier this year with a SAMS Award for their “Top 100 Cost Reduction Initiative“. This groundbreaking project achieved considerable savings by combining the capabilities of both the IT and procurement departments with Aspera SmartTrack.

A SAM focus on people, not just software

You don’t earn that kind of success with cookie cutter SAM tools. You earn it with technology built with real-world feedback, and with SAM solutions that work seamlessly with existing IT.

Thanks to Aspera we now have a transparent, company-wide overview of licenses, software installations, and license demand. Our software inventory covers over 1,500 items from more than 100 software publishers. We’ve been able to increase the productivity of the employees in software purchasing by 10.

-Thomas Stange, Head of License Management Department, Bitmarck

Our own customer survey revealed 98% of our customers rate the overall quality of our SAM tool as good, very good, or excellent. It also revealed 98% of our customers feel good, very good, or excellent about their relationship with Aspera.

Customer satisfaction doesn’t come after a job well done. It gets the job done well. Offering flexible products or taking customer feedback makes us better at our jobs and achieves better results for our customers.

Whether we’re optimizing license costs or helping a company through an audit, it’s helpful to remember that we’re in the people business as much as we’re in the software business. Relationships matter.

Maybe that’s visionary, but that’s just how we work.

Evidence section of the Gartner Report:

1According to the 2017 Gartner SAM Tools Research Circle Survey, only 23% of respondents reported their SAM tools aligned extremely well with their prepurchase expectations. This was conducted via an online survey from 9 January 2017 to 23 January 2017 among Gartner Research Circle Members — a Gartner-managed panel composed of IT and business leaders. Gartner Research Circle IT and IT-Business Members were invited to participate. Sixty percent of the base are IT professionals, 38% a blend of IT and business and 2% are business-focused. We had 101members participate, all of whom have either already deployed SAM tools or plan to deploy SAM tools: 49% of the participants were from North America, 42% from EMEA, 5% from Asia/Pacific (APAC) and 4% from Latin America. Respondents came from a variety of industries, with the highest concentration in manufacturing (26%), and 47% of the base are from companies with more than $1 billion in annual revenue. The survey was developed collaboratively by a team of Gartner analysts, and was reviewed, tested and administered by Gartner's Research Data and Analytics team.
